Dynamics 365 CE (Customer Engagement) is Microsoft's business application for managing everything to do with customers: leads, contacts, accounts, sales opportunities, and support cases. You'll also hear it called Dynamics 365 CRM, D365 CE, or just CRM — all pointing at the same thing.

Quick facts
  • CE = Customer Engagement, Microsoft's umbrella term for this app family
  • CRM = Customer Relationship Management, the general industry term
  • Built on Dataverse, a shared database and rules engine
  • Ships as several apps: Sales, Customer Service, Marketing, and more

One foundation, several apps

Dynamics 365 CE isn't one program. It's a set of apps — Sales, Customer Service, Marketing — that all sit on top of one shared foundation called Dataverse. Dataverse stores the actual data and enforces the rules (security, validation). The apps are just different toolsets reading and writing to that same foundation.

Quick analogy: Dataverse is like a phone's operating system. Messages, Camera, and Calendar are separate apps, but they all share the same contacts list underneath.

Example A sales rep moves a deal from "Qualify" to "Proposal Sent" inside the Sales app. A support agent in the separate Customer Service app can still see that same customer's full history — both apps are just different windows into the same Dataverse records.

CRM vs. ERP

New to the space? These two get mixed up constantly:

SystemMainly aboutExample data
CRM (Dynamics 365 CE)Customer relationships, before and after the saleLeads, opportunities, cases
ERP (Dynamics 365 Finance/Business Central)Running the internal businessInvoices, ledger, inventory

Many companies run both, connected so a CRM sales order flows through to ERP invoicing. As a beginner: CRM is customer-facing, ERP is back-office. This entire course is about the CRM/CE side.

Why "Dataverse" matters here

You'll see the word Dataverse constantly. Once you hear "table," "column," or "record" later in this course, that's Dataverse terminology — the same concepts everywhere, whether you're in Sales, Customer Service, or a custom app. Learn Dataverse's building blocks once (next course) and they apply everywhere.

Key takeaway: Dynamics 365 CE = a family of apps (Sales, Customer Service, and more) built on one shared foundation, Dataverse. Different job, same foundation.
